For
my article comparisons, I reviewed two different types of articles about our
Penn State Dance Marathon. One article is by 6abc.com News and one
is by our very own Onward State. The two articles are on the same event, but
have very different effects. The audiences are completely different and
therefore the writers must take different tones. One tone is directed toward
students and volunteers with firsthand experience. They have a completely
different look on the event and feelings which make the students want to read
things that they don’t know about, instead of the statistics the 6abc shares.
The
outside view of the 6abc article shares facts and numbers that many people who don’t
live in State College may not know about. Although it is so common to many of
us locals and students, many people from other states have not heard of it or don’t
know much. The article is more informative with quotes from volunteers so other
people can grasp a little bit of the feeling the event produces. The eye-catching
fact is that we raised $10 million, but for the students around here, that’s common
knowledge.
Although
the two articles have the same topic, they have very different tones, audiences,
central ideas, etc. They have different effects and appeal to different
demographics and age groups.
