Reflection Paper

For our reflection paper assignment, I am having trouble coming up with a point to argue or question to answer through my own personal experiences. I can think of a lot of points in general that may bother me but not necessarily stories that correspond that I can reflect on. On the other hand I also have a lot of topics and stories that correspond with my ten years of sleep away camp experience, but no specific points or questions that I can think of.

I think I am an expert on my camp. I have been going there every summer since I was seven and have gone through every age group from the youngest to the oldest and on to the staff side of things. I think that I would be able to answer any question about my specific sleep away camp and the general experience of attending camp. I know all the inner working details of how my camp is run and could probably run it myself at this point. My dream job is to run a camp just like the one I grew up at. I believe growing up at this great get-away location has shaped me into the person I am today, and the family I belong to considering we all have had great experiences there.

I have infinite stories about my experiences as a camper and my days as a counselor dealing with my campers. I was also picked to lead one of the two teams during color war, and I won! With all of this experience I must have some point or question to argue but I cannot think of what it is. If any of my readers have questions about my camp experience or camp experiences in general, do not hesitate to ask!

  1. I think its really cool that you've been to sleep away camp every summer since you were seven.
I didn't go on my first sleep away camping trip until two years ago.

I think your idea of writing about your experience at your sleep away camp is really good. You expressed that your dream job is to run a camp just like the one you went to. Maybe a point you can make is how by having more camps like the ones you went to will help people grow. You can put in experiences into the paper too to argue for your points...???

maybe? I am not sure just a suggestion.

I don't really know if I understand this paper though. And I am not really sure what I want to write about in my paper either... So no worries! We're all in the same boat! :)

  2. I agree with Mei I think that a clear point would be needed to make this paper succeed. Mei also had a good suggestion about writing about how camp is good for kids and how it makes them grow. I think also that your experiences will help your claims and maybe you could talk about the psychology factor that kids go through or how it may help when you go off to college to not get as home sick? I think there are many ways to this paper so just thinking out loud and maybe something with spark your interest more. I have been to numerous summer camps of different kinds and I know one thing that help keep that friendship bond that you created at camp was Facebook and you could possibly talk about how technologies help or hurt summer camps. I know I went to a summer camp called Young Life and they took away our phones for a week and it was the best thing ever! I hated it at first and then ended up loving it. I don't know your experiences so you may not be able to relate to that but once again just thinking.

  3. Alexa, I think a good way to incorporate your experiences at camp into a concise essay topic would be to show the importance it has had on your life. You could talk about different experiences you have had a camp and how they have changed you as a person. You may want to talk about how camp helps your ability to make new friends, prepares you for college, and many other ways you were affected positively. Are you going to work at your camp over the summer? This may be a good occasion for your paper and a nice way to introduce your topic.

  4. I actually have never been to a sleep away camp but I know a lot of kids that went to them before and they always had fun at them. I would also agree with the point that maybe your topic can be you explaining how the camp has influenced you and how camps have a positive affect on kids? or maybe talk about how it has somehow help you with something? Your summer camp experiences can be very helpful though and you'll be able to explain it well because you know so much about the camp.

  5. I agree with Mei and Brooke that you would need a clear point or question to explore about sleepaway camp. I also think it is a good idea to go the route of talking about how the experience of sleepaway camp can change kids or prepare them for being independent later in life. I went to sleepaway camp a few years and I think it definitely had some impact on me.
